Naturally Curious and Incredibly Open-Minded

Happy New Year Dear Readers! I hope 2024 is off to a great start for you all.

The first several months of this year are going to be big for me as I prepare for the May 2024 publication of my book, Gun Curious: A Liberal Professor’s Surprising Journey Inside America’s Gun Culture. Much more about that is forthcoming on all of my online channels.

Today, I sat down to work on my 2023 year-in-review and plan for some upcoming events (notably a virtual book club and Sociology of Guns public webinar) and I saw an email from Grammarly, a tool I use as an AI copy-editor.

In addition to helping me day-to-day, Grammarly apparently also analyzes the bigger picture of my writing. Today Grammarly revealed by “2023 Writing Style.”

I have no idea how this assessment is made, but I could not find it more gratifying. I do not simply preach the importance of curiosity and open-mindedness, I practice it.

Especially in the field of gun studies, I hope I will always ask smart questions, seek to uncover essential details, and make others feel understood.

As this blog has stated since its inception in 2012:

My approach to Gun Culture 2.0 is inspired by philosopher Baruch Spinoza: “I have sedulously endeavored not to laugh at human actions, nor to lament them, nor to detest them, but to understand them.”

Light Over Heat.

If I ever fail in this aspiration, please let me know.
