Yesterday I wrote about a new source of information about guns in America, written from a gun rights perspective, Open Source Defense.

One aspect of their work that I neglected to mention was the dedicated page on their website called “Take a Newbie Shooting.”

As you can see from the screen cap above, it has two options: one for the newbie shooter and one for the teacher of the newbie. The text for those who will take a newbie shooter shooting covers all the basics and includes a few videos on how to use pistols, rifles, and shotguns.

I love this aspect of Open Source Defense’s site because one of the three main takeaways from my talk at the National Firearms Law Seminar last spring was that people interested in advancing gun culture should promote the act of shooting whenever possible.

As I said then and have said on a couple of occasions on my “Gun Curious” blog, shooting is fun (and more fun). But for someone outside of gun culture, the barriers to shooting can be high. Open Source Defense does a little bit to lower that barrier.
